The Bandra-Kurla Complex has been long since deemed as the "growth centre" of Mumbai city. Originally a marshy land near Mahim Creek, it is now a planned commercial complex, built to decongest Southern Mumbai.

Way back in 1977, the MMRDA was declared the "Special Planning Authority" for setting up and developing the Bandra-Kurla complex. Then, the complex was spread over 370 hectares of low-rise land on both sides of the Mithi river, Vakola Nalla and Mahim Creek. Weak drainage system and pollution greatly affected the area. So, the Mithi river and Vakola nalla were channelized to regulate proper movement of water and cut down the pollution. This way, the hydraulic features of these water bodies were improved, and the Bandra-Kurla Complex was sanitized in an organized manner.

So far, 19 hectares of marshy land have been converted into office spaces and categorized as E-Block that can potentially hold 17,400 jobs. A "City Park" too has been constructed on a 22,500 square metres area in this complex. A G-Block too has been planned, where an International Finance and Business Centre (IFBC) is to be constructed. This development is aimed at creating office spaces of international standards, that have good accessibility and top quality amenities.

Today, to own an office in the Bandra-Kurla Complex is in itself a matter of prestige! The complex hosts offices of biggies like Fortune 500, Citibank, Asian Heart Institute, Bharat Diamond Bourse and the likes.
